Hi, I want to excite you about September's First Thursday at
SunnyView. *PLEASE
put this event on your calendars NOW!*
Most of you know Ted Peters as one of our most pre-eminent theologians.
Having him close by in Berkeley gives us access to his keen insights on a
variety of concerns.
In our recent Thursday discussions, we've talked about things including the
difficulty of understanding *atonement* with our contemporary mindset and
assumptions. We read together and discussed the recent book by Brian
McClaren, "A New Kind of Christianity" which addrssed this doctrinal
concern among other matters.
Ted is planning to be here for a "*Ted Talk" *on the issue of atonment and
how we talk about doctrinal issues. He will be with us on *September 6
from noon to 3 p.m. (note that this allows about 2 hours for discussion
with him.)*
* *
*In preparation* for his visit, he encourages us to prepare by reading any
or all of the following:
"How Does Jesus Save? Models of Atonement." You might also read in advance
Ted's theological brief, "Models of Atonement" at
http://www.plts.edu/ite.html .
I also found this recent blog in Christian Century by one of our young
theological thinkers to be valuable:
http://www.christiancentury.org/blogs/archive/2012-06/theological-doctrines-plain-speech-and-public-square
Please plan to attend! It should be a great start to cleaning away the
summer cobwebs and opening our minds to clear thinking on
important "stuff."
Peace, Jim
