*El Camino Real Conference        First Thursday Gathering        Recap *

*October 2016*

Greetings,

Here are a few notes from our gathering yesterday. Feel free to respond,
add, correct, complain, or affirm. (Read the attached version for a more
readable format.)

We pondered the question, =E2=80=9CWhat helps you to be your best as a mini=
ster?=E2=80=9D

I shared my =E2=80=9Cjealousy over the sheep.=E2=80=9D At my worst I get te=
rritorial and
defensive when it comes to joint ministry. When in a better frame of mind I
want what is best for all people wherever and with whomever they find a
connection and get nourishment.

John G brought two books pertaining to the topic, =E2=80=9CPersonality Plus=
=E2=80=9D and
=E2=80=9CThe Five Love Languages.=E2=80=9D He has found it freeing to disco=
ver more about
his own personality and gained a greater appreciation for the uniqueness of
others. These books also helped with understanding how to fill one=E2=80=99=
s own
=E2=80=9Clove tank=E2=80=9D and how to best appreciate and build up others.

As far as motivation goes, John likes to have a clear vision of where he
and the church want to go. This pulls him forward.

Jared spoke of the hundreds of Swahili speakers in the area. Many go to big
congregations in the area but come to him for help when they have needs.
This is a challenge for him. He shared the insight that these are not his
sheep but they are Jesus=E2=80=99 sheep.

Manda talked about unspoken or disparate expectations being a problem.

Jim mentioned a comment from Bill Wong about Paul=E2=80=99s churches no lon=
ger
being in existence. The ministry continues but it is not tied down
geographically. Pulling back and seeing the big picture keeps us from
getting too attached.

Peggy finds that regular engagement with scripture and colleagues keeps her
honest, aware, grounded, and reminds her of her calling.

Anne talked about getting =E2=80=9Cdo overs=E2=80=9D every day. This is at =
the center of
our Lutheran faith. We are both saint and forgiven sinner at the same time.

Cristina said her best practice is to rely on the Holy Spirit, remembering
that we are flawed human beings and that the day will not go as planned. We
are not going to meet the expectations of all people and that is okay. She
also likes =E2=80=9Cdo-over Thursday=E2=80=A6=E2=80=9D

David Dahl=E2=80=99s best practices are to =E2=80=9Ckeep curious and keep i=
t simple.=E2=80=9D

David Bonde talked about truly becoming a Lutheran while in a missions
class and hearing a missionary to Thailand differentiate between the monk
(Luther) and the monk=E2=80=99s understanding of the gospel. He considers t=
he
=E2=80=9Ctentmaking=E2=80=9D part of ministry to be what allows us to bring=
 a word of grace
and these moments make it all worthwhile. In the midst of a chaotic
situation in Detroit he stepped away and pondered a maple tree. He came to
the conclusion that as the maple tree only needs to be a maple tree, he
only needs to be himself.

Ben tries to bring joy to ordinary situations. Add an element of happiness,
something to be excited about. Remind people that there is a task to be
done when groups gather but there is value in the gathering itself. Bring a
non-anxious presence to systems to avoid short circuits. We are more than a
social service provider with sacraments (Bishop Eaton.) Faith comes by
hearing. We are in the good news business. Lift up the name of Jesus.

Sara expressed gratitude.

Nate humbly listened and expressed that he had nothing to add.

Gabe shared about the ELCA=E2=80=99s world hunger emphasis this year.
