Thanks Pastor Anne Building a Community of Lutheran Leaders Professional Leadership Conference The Sierra Pacific Synod Presenting problem We are a collection of slightly more than 200 Lutheran churches in the Sierra Pacific Synod spread out over a large geographic region. It can be difficult for clergy to attend conference meetings and participate in the other events of the larger church. Additionally, many clergy have simply dropped out altogether for reasons other than geography. Our clergy have been educated at different seminaries and hail from all over the United States and other nations of the world. As is commonly the practice on the west coast, many of them have attended state universities to receive their undergraduate education; some of them are cradle Lutherans whose faith has been nurtured at parochial schools and colleges of the church. Many of the clergy have come to Lutheranism later in life and were raised other Christian traditions or even other faith traditions. There is a good deal of diversity amongst the clergy. Conversations about the ordination of LGBT persons have been a painful and difficult matter for this Synod almost since the start of the ELCA. Our worship practices vary - some congregations offer only contemporary worship, some only a high liturgy. Our "sung" pieties vary, as many are unfamiliar with the hymns of the Lutheran tradition. Some congregations confess the Ancient Creeds of the church each week, and other congregations are committed to rewriting these ancient truths in contemporary language on a regular basis. Further examples of our diversity include Ebenezer Lutheran Church in San Francisco advertises itself as part of the Herchurch Movement. Their website is herchurch.org. Other clergy is very active in the Society of the Holy Trinity: A Lutheran Ministerium. They too have a website. Undoubtedly, there is great diversity in other Synods of the ELCA and can be seen as a sign of the creative energy of the Spirit. This diversity has been painful for the clergy of this Synod. We hold our Lutheran identity in common, but are not sure what this looks like for us. We are profoundly interested in your thoughts on this matter and it is our hope that your keynote speeches will inspire us to live faithfully and fully into our shared identity as rostered leaders in the ELCA and the West. ------=_NextPart_000_0021_01C8C63B.9BB63980 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html xmlns:o=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns:w=3D"urn:sc= hemas-microsoft-com:office:word" xmlns:st1=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:off= ice:smarttags" xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40">
<META HTTP-EQUIV=3D"Content-Type" CONTENT=3D"text/html; charset=3Dus-ascii"= > <meta name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 11 (filtered medium)"> <o:SmartTagType namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"City"/> <o:SmartTagType namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"country-region"/> <o:SmartTagType namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"place"/>

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>Hello everyone:

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>This is the "Case" Pastor Janet Carlson presented to each= of our guest speakers for the Leadership Conference at Asilomar.</s= pan>

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>Thanks

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>Pastor Anne

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>

<font size=3D4 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D'font-size:14.0pt;font-weight:bold'>Building a Community of Luthera= n Leaders

<font size=3D4 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D'font-size:14.0pt;font-weight:bold'>Professional Leadership Confere= nce

<font size=3D4 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D'font-size:14.0pt;font-weight:bold'>The Sierra Pacific Synod</= o:p>

<font size=3D4 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D'font-size:14.0pt;font-weight:bold'> =

<font size=3D4 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D'font-size:14.0pt;font-weight:bold'>Presenting problem</= span>

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>

<font size=3D3 face=3D"Times New Roman"><span style=3D= 'font-size: 12.0pt'>We are a collection of slightly more than 200 Lutheran churches in = the Sierra Pacific Synod spread out over a large geographic region.
