Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17) It is also important to recognize that the forgiveness of sins is announced not just in the confessional or pulpit, but in the mutual consolation of the brothers and sisters. We are called and authorized to declare to one another that our sins are forgiven. So forgiveness is declared around coffee tables and water coolers and as you ride to school with your child. There the Holy Spirit is present to create faith, to give ears/hearts that receive the word of forgiveness. Or, at least, it should be happening in all those places.
