Dear Friends:=20
Thank you for allowing me to speak at the March conference meeting and to g=
ive me the opportunity to personally invite you the conference that I am he=
lping to organize.=20
I am aware that point of view re. this topic vary a great deal, but I hope =
that we can agree on the importance of churches to create safe spaces at wh=
ich people can passionately, yet respectfully debate controversial subjects=
that affect our citizens one way or another.=20
We hear a lot of talk about the need of the church to be a public church, a=
church that proclaims God's love, grace, and forgiveness on many different=
levels, ranging from the very personal to a global context. =C2=A0The "Bre=
aking the Barriers" conference is an attempt to add a Christian perspective=
onto Holy Land conflict than the one that dominates the public airwaves.=
=20
This conference is, indeed, an attempt to give Palestinians (Christians and=
Muslims) a forum to tell their story. =C2=A0The conference organizers feel=
that we hear the other side (the majority Israeli position, which is suppo=
rted by parts of evangelical Christianity in the US) and that there is a ne=
ed to hear the other side as well.=20
The way I hear the Gospel is that God comes to the aid of the poor and lowl=
y ones and seeks to come to their aid and that we are called to do the same=
, so that all may live in harmony. =C2=A0I do not hear neutrality in this c=
all, a "preferential option for the poor."=20
If you have thought about attending this conference, please know that there=
still is time to register. =C2=A0You can do so at=C2=A0 http://www.barrier=
s-conference.org/RegistrationWorkshop.php=20
=C2=A0=20
Challenging some of the politics of the state of Israel is=C2=A0 not=C2=A0 =
anti-Semitism as some would have, but simply a critique of the politics of =
a particular state; evidenced by the fact that the conference has been endo=
rsed by Jewish Voice for Peace ( http://www.barriers-conference.org/SabeelS=
tatement.shtml=20
=C2=A0 ). =C2=A0We feel that peace and justice is in the best interest of a=
ll the people living in the Holy Land, jews and Palestinians alike.=20
If you feel that it important for Christians to add their voice to matters =
of national significance, please practice that belief by attending the conf=
erence. =C2=A0rarely ever will you find as knowledgeable a group to speak a=
bout this subject as the speakers we have been able to assemble.=20
Hoping to see you At Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church on March 23-24.=20
Peace,=20
