Resurrection Faith

Heb 13:14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for
the city that is to come.

Bishop Thomas Ken was appointed to office by King Charles II of England in
1685 because of his ability to stand up to the king. Under James II Ken was
imprisoned in the Tower of London for his refusal to compromise his beliefs,
even at the king's command. (He was eventually acquitted.)

The good bishop was known not only for his strength of character, but also
for the strength of his belief in the Resurrection. He may be best known for
the hymn text commonly known as OLD HUNDREDTH: Praise God, from whom all
blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye
heavenly hosts; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. This verse also appears
at the end of other hymns penned by him.

Although not his most famous, the hymn "Awake my soul" gives the best
glimpse of Bishop Ken's Resurrection faith. The second verse is most
enlightening:

All praise to thee, who safe hast kept and hast refreshed me while I slept.

Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake, I may of endless light partake.
(LBW 269)

Thomas Ken requested that his funeral should take place at dawn, and that
his remains be laid under the East Window of the church (St John in Frome),
so that he might be the first to rise at the dawning of the Lord's coming.
His wishes were fulfilled, and his friends sang this hymn at his funeral as
the sun's first rays touched the coffin.

Let us pray.

Dear Lord, thank you for witnesses to the faith like Bishop Ken, who refused
to buckle under power, but rather risked his life for his faith. Thank you
for his witness preserved for us in his hymns, and for his faith in the
Resurrection. Lord, give me such a faith: a faith that is strong in you, a
faith that is eagerly awaiting your coming, when I (together with other
believers) will come into your Kingdom and live with you forever.

Lord, strengthen me today as I go about my activities; give me the peace
that comes by knowing all things are under your control. I praise you:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, together with all the heavenly hosts, because
you are my God. Amen
